Why I Started This
I was first introduced to blind auditions in graduate school. Out of an eleven-person trumpet studio, I often felt like I was the least prepared. Ensemble placement was determined by a single audition each semester: one shot behind a screen, with no room for nerves, no space to grow, and no second chances. I never landed the heavy-hitting repertoire or the coveted ensembles. I was always placed in the background.
After graduating, I saw a posting for Second Trumpet with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The application fee was $200. It was a lot - intimidating, even - but I took the plunge and auditioned. Around 200 musicians showed up that day. I knew I wouldn't make it past the first round, but I went anyway.
The first excerpt was Charlier Etude No. 6. I stumbled through the notes almost immediately. All I heard after that was a quiet, “Thank you.”
That was the last blind audition I ever took.
What stayed with me wasn’t just the nerves or the rejection; it was how few chances we get to actually practice the audition process itself. Travel, lodging, application fees, time off work... it all adds up. And still, none of it prepares you for what happens behind that screen.
I started this program because I want to get better at it, and because I know I’m not the only one. This is for every musician who wants more than one chance to grow, improve, and prepare. Because it shouldn’t take a $200 gamble to find out if you're ready.
